Monday, March 8, 2021

Public Works Secretary Mark A. Villar announced the completion of a revetment structure along Apayao River that will address the flooding in Barangay Barocboc, Municipality of Marcela, Province of Apayao.

Secretary Villar said that part of the completed flood mitigation structure are works for the installation of 10,296 linear-meter steel sheet piles, construction of 844.2 cubic-meter concrete slope protection, and 1,300 pieces hexapods.

In the past, Barangay Barocboc has been experiencing continuous riverbank collapse due to erosion, scouring, river bed degradation, and wave wash coming from the upstream rivers of Apayao Province during rainy season.

“We are doing our best to extend our help, most especially to residents living in low-lying areas, doing projects to save lives and properties,” said Secretary Villar.

Various engineering interventions were applied by DPWH to help in reducing erosion, scouring and flooding in the municipality and nearby areas.

Prior to construction of revetment structure, it was reported that a purok was once scoured and collapsed after the Apayao River meandered to nearly 1 kilometer.
