Significant improvements can now be seen by motorists passing through Mel Lopez Boulevard (previously Radial Road 10) in Manila City with the 172 newly-installed plant boxes by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
According to DPWH National Capital Region Director Nomer Abel P. Canlas, the on-going installation of remaining 32 plant boxes along the center island of the eight (8) lane national road connecting Port Area, Manila and Navotas City is more than just for aesthetic beauty.
“The construction of concrete plant boxes is part of the “Clean and Green” Advocacy Program of DPWH Secretary Roger G. Mercado aimed to uphold and maintain the integrity of roads through greening and improvement, spearheaded by DPWH North Manila District Engineering Office (DEO),” said Director Canlas.
The fabrication of plant boxes from Moriones Street to Pacheco Street and on Del Pan Bridge in Tondo, amounting to P999,000 under the 2021 DPWH Routine Maintenance Fund, is being implemented by the workers employed through the Assistance to Youth and Unemployed for Development and Advancement (AYUDA) Program launched by Secretary Mercado.
The Clean and Green Program of major thoroughfares in NCR also involves rehabilitation of damaged road pavements, removal of undesired vegetation, and repainting of curbs and gutters for improved visibility and safety of motorists.
