Residents of an agricultural area in Sarangani Province can now safely cross over Lower Mainit River through a newly completed bridge constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Based on a report submitted by DPWH Region 12 Director Basir M. Ibrahim to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, the Lower Mainit Bridge was completed in the amount of ₱86.84 million under the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
“Since its completion in June, the bridge in Barangay Lower Mainit, Malungon has facilitated cheaper transportation costs, safer passage amidst weather disturbances, and allowed convenient access for locals wishing to avail social and health services in the city,” said Director Ibrahim.
The agricultural community expressed their gratitude to DPWH for the infrastructure development which now contributes to higher income returns for farmers in Malungon, recognized as the biggest mango-producing town in Soccsksargen.
Implemented by DPWH Sarangani District Engineering Office, the project also involved the construction of 260 meters of slope protection and 116 meters of stone masonry to mitigate flooding and soil scouring in the occurrence of typhoons.
The bridge with a total length of 60 meters also has an approach road of 323 meters made of portland concrete cement pavement.
The bridge replaced the previous footbridge and now benefits seven (7) land-locked barangays namely Upper and Lower Mainit, Upper Lumabat, San Juan, San Miguel, and San Roque, by serving as direct access to economic hubs in the town proper.
