The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will take advantage of the Holy Week break to rush the construction works on a project that will minimize flooding around the vicinity of Manila City Hall.
DPWH-NCR Director Melvin B. Navarro said starting on Holy Wednesday, April 12, 2017, total road closure on the northbound direction of Bonifacio Drive corner P. Burgos Street in Port Area, Manila will be implemented for the installation of reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC).
“This Lenten Break, when traffic is light at the Metropolis, we will install 2-rows of 27-lineal meter long, 60 inches diameter RCBC. These are big drainage structures that can handle huge amount of floodwater in the low-lying areas, in this case the vicinity of Manila City Hall,” said Director Navarro.
The northbound direction of Bonifacio Drive is set to be opened on April 17, 2017, when the boxes have been installed after using one day-curing concrete.
Same activity will be done on its southbound direction on three (3) consecutive weekends beginning April 22 to May 9, 2017. It will start every Saturday at 7:00 a.m. until Tuesday, at 8:00 a.m. and will affect two (2) vehicular lanes.
According to Director Navarro, early coordination has been made with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and utility companies such as Meralco and Maynilad to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
The flood-control structure costing P62.7 million involves construction of a 630-lineal meter RCBC and is expected to be completed by July 2017.
