Fishermen in Cardona, Rizal can now easily navigate along waterways that were cleared from hyacinth by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
DPWH CALABARZON Director Samson L. Hebra said water hyacinths that have long clogged river of Cardona and halted fishing activities were removed using backhoes of the DPWH Bureau of Equipment (BOE).
“Upon the request from the local government unit (LGU), we immediately coordinated with our BOE to start clearing obstructions along the impassable river, allowing fishermen to navigate along the waterways again,” said Director Hebra.
The prevalent growth of water hyacinths has been a major problem of Cardona for several decades already as it has rendered rivers impassable, making fishing a difficult and more costly task.
With the clearing operations of DPWH, fishing which is a major source of income in the municipality, will be revived.
Director Hebra said affected fishermen extended their appreciation in the fast action and assistance of the DPWH that prompted facilitation of motorway for fishermen’s boats.
