The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) inaugurated the phase 3 of a multi-billion peso answer to flooding caused by channel overflow of the Pasig-Marikina River.
DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar with Japanese Minister Keiichi Ishii of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda led the inauguration of Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Phase III on Sunday, April 29, 2018.
Also in attendance are DPWH Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain; Assistant Secretary Maximo Carvajal; Project Directors Patrick Gatan, Sharif Masmo Hasim and Johnson Domingo and representatives from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
“With the completion of the Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Phase III, we were able to significantly protect lives and properties of people living close to river channels of Pasig and Marikina, particularly the traversed area of Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, Taguig and Quezon City, not to mention promote a better and more sustainable community,” said Secretary Villar.
Funded under JICA loan, the newly-completed project costing a total of P6.97 Billion covers Pasig River Improvement Works from Delpan Bridge to Napindan Channel under Contract Package No. 1 and Lower Marikina River Improvement from Napindan Channel to Downstream of Manggahan Floodway under Contract Package No. 2.
Major works in the P3.34 Billion Contract Package No. 1 include the construction and improvement of 12.43-kilometer revetments with river wall, 6.54-kilometer steel sheet pile and 166 drainage outlets with manholes and connecting pipes along Pasig River in the cities of Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, and Pasig.
For the P3.63 Contract Package No. 2, major works include the dredging of 950,000 cubic meters along the 5-kilometer Lower Marikina River, construction of dike/revetment, 1.8-kilometer steel sheet pile, drainage works with nine (9) sluice structures and 1,400-meter main drainage covering Pasig, Taguig, and Quezon City.
