The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is more than halfway done with its P2-Billion flood control project along the 3.31-kilometer riverbanks of Cagayan River in Tuguegarao City.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark A. Villar recently led an inspection of the project which covers the construction of revetment and spurdike along the riverbanks of Barangays Alibago, Enrile, and Cataggaman, Tuguegarao City.

“To date, the Cagayan River Basin Project being implemented in three (3) flood-prone barangays of Tugeugarao is now 65 percent completed. We hope that our contractor Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., Ltd. will be able to deliver full completion of this project by 2019,” said Secretary Villar.

According to Secretary Villar, the billion peso project will not only cover structural but also nonstructural measures against flooding for the low-lying barangays of Tuguegarao.

The project involves the construction of 940-meter revetment in Barangay Alibago, 1,400-meter revetment and 970-meter spurdike in Barangay Cataggaman, including the excavation of a total of 405,000 cubic meters, and embankment/backfill of about 167,000 cubic meters in Barangay Enrile.

Funded under a loan agreement between the Philippine and Japanese Government, the Cagayan River Basin project is being implemented by the DPWH Unified Project Management Office – Flood Control Management Cluster since 2016. It is a sub-project of the bigger Flood Risk Management Project for Cagayan River, Tagoloan River, and Imus River.
