DPWH marks 120th Anniversary

The Department of Public Works and Highways kicked-off its week-long anniversary celebration with the unveiling on June 18, 2018 of its theme "120 Years of Bridging Modern Development" and launching of Regional “One Town One Product” Exhibits at the DPWH Central Office, Port Area, Manila.

This year’s theme emphasizes the sustainable infrastructure projects delivered through the years that helped drives Philippines' economic growth and competitiveness vital to the improvement in the quality of life of all Filipinos.

Three (3) major outcomes of reduced travel time, improved road quality and safety, and lives and properties protected from natural disasters have been set by DPWH that shall be the Department’s contribution in achieving the goal of sustainable development.

In line with the DPWH 120th anniversary celebration, the Government Service Insurance System, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Home Development Mutual Fund more popularly known as the Pag-IBIG Fund were invited to set-up on June 19-20, 2018 a Mobile Assistance Desk for inquiries and concerns of DPWH employees followed on June 21, 2018 by an Employees Welfare Seminar on topics effective financial management and lifestyle disease prevention.

On Friday, June 22, 2018, the anniversary program will start with a thanksgiving mass, giving of recognition to retirees and loyalty awardees for their untiring support and contribution, and awarding of Sportsfest winners and individual distinction.

Working in an environment of trust, respect, and cooperation, DPWH officials and employees will channel the energy into their legs as they run together from its headquarter at Bonifacio Drive to Quirino Grandstand and back to DPWH Central Office for the short Fun Run on the anniversary day, Saturday, June 23.

Started its operation in June 23, 1898 when then President Emilio Aguinaldo issued Organic Decree establishing Revolutionary Government with four (4) government departments, one of which was the Department of War and Public Works.

After a long process of evolution, by virtue of Executive Order No. 124, dated January 30, 1987, the agency is now known as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) with six (6) bureaus, nine (9) services, seventeen (16) regional offices, five (5) Unified Project Management Offices (UPMO), and one hundred eighty-three (183) District Engineering Offices committed to accelerate the process of nation building through infrastructure projects that shall be its legacy to the country.
Among the significant accomplishments of the Department under the President Rodrigo Roa Duterte administration include the completion of widening of the Governor Miranda Bridge II along Daang Maharlika in Davao del Norte; widening of a 4.75 kilometer section of Radial Road 10 (R-10) which reduced travel time between Manila and Navotas City; widening and drainage improvement project along the west bound of Quezon Avenue from Elliptical Road to Agham Road, Quezon City; Cagayan de Oro Coastal Road which lessened the travel time by 20 minutes from Laguindingan Airport to Cagayan de Oro City; widening of 245-lineal meter Barkadahan Bridge in Taytay, Rizal that benefitted thousands of motorists utilizing Laguna Lake Highway as an alternative route to the congested EDSA and C-5 Road; widening of a 672-lineal meter portion of Katipunan Avenue south bound from Shuster St. to C.P. Garcia Avenue, fronting University of the Philippines – Diliman Campus; 6-kilometer portion of Laguna Lake Highway eastbound from M.L. Quezon Avenue to Napindan Bridge including a 3-meter wide space for bikers and joggers in Taguig City; 365-lineal meter Lisap Bridge along Calapan South Road in Barangay Hagan, Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro; 665-lineal meter Sugpon Bridge along Alilem-Sugpon-Sudipen Road, Sugpon, Ilocos Sur; Plaridel Bypass Road Project Phase 2 covering a total length of 9.96 kilometers including the 1,121 lineal meters bridge spanning the scenic Angat River; Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Phase III; widening of Davao River Bridge along Davao City Diversion Road in Davao City; construction of bigger drainage along the 2.27 kilometers Padre Burgos Avenue linked with the newly improved Luneta Pumping Station, Manila; and additional 700 lineal meter portion of Mindanao Avenue Extension completing the section from P. dela Cruz Street to MGM Road, Valenzuela City.
