Manila traffic rerouted due to closure of Otis Bridge

Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark A. Villar inspected the Otis Bridge in P. Guazon, Paco, Manila.

The 50-year old Otis Bridge was closed and no longer passable to motorists after damages on its girder and concrete deck were observed early Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

In his report to Secretary Mark A. Villar, DPWH South Manila District Engineer Mikunug Macud said that the damaged Otis Bridge was long due for replacement but was pushed back because of other ongoing construction projects that have tied up traffic in the area.

“We will begin the repair and construction works this evening. We will also implement a 24/7 work schedule so we can expedite the bridge construction”, Villar said.

Secretary Villar discussed that with the progressive collapse of the bridge component, the reconstruction work will have to commence immediately utilizing the allocated funds in the national budget amounting P37 Million.

“We are planning to make the bridge passable in 9 months”, Villar added.
