The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) commenced the second phase of the protection works against rockslides in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte.
According to DPWH Southern Leyte District Engineer Ma. Margarita Junia, the P62-million project for the safety of residents and travelling public involves rock netting, provision of stone masonry crib walls, slope protection, and installation of metal guardrails along Bil-atan road section in Sitio Bil-atan, Camang Village, San Ricardo, Southern Leyte
The Bil-atan road section is part of the highway being developed into a circumferential road linking San Ricardo and Liloan towns and will serve as access to Benit port, the region’s exit point to Mindanao.
The project is being implemented in the area which is frequented by rockslides during rainy days, rendering the road impassable.
“In order to ensure the safety of the travelling public, DPWH will utilize Switzerland’s rockfall protection netting technology that uses high tensile wire netting for slope stabilization,” said Junia.
The first phase of this anti-rockslide project with an allocation of P27 million was completed last year while the second phase of this project is on track for completion before the end of 2018.
