Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar announced that an old bridge along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), Pasay City was retrofitted to conform to the latest standard design and seismic guidelines, criteria and specifications of DPWH.
Citing a report from DPWH-National Capital Region Director Ador Canlas, Secretary Villar said DPWH South Manila District Engineering Office has recently completed the strengthening works on Malibay Bridge.
“Without closing to motorists, we were able to fix the hairline cracks underneath Malibay Bridge. Cracks due to wear and tear could potentially endanger motorists if left untreated in case of large-magnitude earthquake,” said Secretary Villar.
“Our men injected epoxy along the bridge’s hairline cracks. It is then retrofitted with carbon fiber and applied with a protective coating to ensure stability and safety,” explained Secretary Villar.
Director Canlas said Malibay Bridge is among the priority bridge projects in Metro Manila that has received funding for its immediate repair in an effort to make vital bridges resilient in the event of earthquakes.
DPWH-NCR has allocated a total of P10 million for retrofitting to strengthen Malibay Bridge.
