Perennial urban flooding in Cagayan de Oro City is expected to be reduced as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has started implementation of two (2) road drainage improvements in Barangay Camaman-an and Barangay Lapasan.
In his report to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, DPWH Region 10 Director Zenaida Tan stated that works are in progress for the construction of the 1.23-kilometer new diversion drainage line in Barangay Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro City.
The P91-million drainage line project includes provision of reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) covering the stretch from Bitan-ag Creek upstream to Kolambog Creek outfall.
DPWH Regional Office 10 is also undertaking the channel improvement of Kolambog Creek from Barangay Camaman-an to Butuan-Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Road (BCIR) and Macajalar Bay outfall in Barangay Lapasan.
The channel improvement project involves construction of an open canal, a 16-meter flat slab bridge, and an 894-meter RCBC, worth P86.9 million.
According to Regional Director Tan, DPWH is now expediting implementation of the two (2) projects after revision of plan and project alignment following the suggestions raised by consultations with the local barangay units.
“We are targeting to complete these projects within the year to reduce, if not totally prevent, flash flooding and ensure safety of residents and motorists in Cagayan de Oro City”, Villar noted.
