A joint force between the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) was formed to take down illegal campaign materials in Leyte.
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) province of Leyte created the task force “Operation Baklas” pursuant to section 26 of COMELEC resolution no. 10488. A synchronized operation was held on the first day of the official election campaign period for local positions in cities and municipalities in Leyte.
According to Gerald Pacanan, DPWH Leyte 2 district engineer, this illegally put-up election paraphernalia along major thoroughfares can pose serious danger to the travelling public.
He added that despite strict campaign rules set by COMELEC, there are still several candidates who fails to comply with them.
Maintenance workers of the district have taken down unlawful election posters obstructing major highways and in public places outside the common posting areas.
“We will strictly comply with this order and monitor same acts for immediate actions especially along our national highway,” said Pacanan.
Campaign period will officially end on May 11, 2019, two days before the Election Day.
