The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has started works for the third phase of the M. Earnshaw (formerly Bustillos Street) Drainage Main Project expected to minimize frequent flooding in the area of Sampaloc, Manila.

DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar announced that the construction of the third phase of the project along J. Fajardo Street to S.H. Loyala Street in Sampaloc, Manila, with a total cost of P27.4-million, is now in full swing.

The M. Earnshaw Drainage Project involves the construction of a two (2) barrel, three (3) meters deep and three (3) meters wide reinforced concrete box culvert stretching from Estero de San Miguel to España Boulevard in Manila with a total length of 1.04-kilometers.

According to DPWH National Capital Region Director Ador G. Canlas, they have already completed the Phase 1 of the project from Estero de San Miguel to Legarda Street, worth P20-million; and the Phase 2 covering Legarda Street to J. Fajardo Street, amounting to P99.9-million.

Upon completion of the final phase covering S.H. Loyola to A.H. Lacson Street, the new drainage line is expected to alleviate frequent flooding in Sampaloc, Manila.

“Hopefully flooding brought by heavy rains in the area recede in 20-30 minutes or to none at all so that we can prevent inconvenience to the public especially during typhoon season,” said Secretary Villar.
