
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bureau of Research and Standards (BRS) recently hosted a research symposium entitled “Building the Future towards Sustainable Development” that highlights scholarly and practical initiatives to improve stability and resiliency of built infrastructure.
Now on its 5th year, the Research Symposium held at “Ang Bahay ng Alumni”, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, showcased ten (10) outstanding research studies with varying topics on disaster resilience, seismic assessment, study of concrete, asphalting, road pavement, slope stabilization, and air cleaning which are supportive to DPWH commitment in providing quality and safe infrastructure.
The presentation includes researches from De La Salle University; Ingevity Corporation; Mapúa University; University of the Philippines – Diliman; GEOBRUGG AG; Maccaferri (Philippines), Inc.; Shell Bitumen Philippines; and the Bureau of Research and Standards.
DPWH BRS Director Reynaldo G. Tagudando said that integrating new methodologies in the structural design of infrastructure is necessary to improve the level of safety, security, and stability of constructed projects.
On the other hand, Assistant Secretary Maximo L. Carvajal encouraged young engineers to further develop their skills and technical know-how in the advent of new technologies not only for research but also for the engineering practice.
DPWH Assistant Secretary Antonio V. Molano, Jr. commended the timeliness of this event in light of recent occurrence of calamities and other disruptive events in the country.
The symposium was attended by some 250 engineers, researchers, scholars from the academe, other government offices, private organizations and industry partners who also witnessed the exhibition of breakthrough tools and equipment applicable in the implementation of construction projects.
