The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a regional evacuation complex that will provide emergency service and public assistance before, during, and immediately after calamities in Catbalogan, Samar.
Assistant District Engineer Ruben delos Reyes of DPWH Samar 2nd District Engineering Office led the turnover ceremony of the new facility together with representatives from Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Office 8 and local officials of Catbalogan City.
The P36-million regional evacuation center can accommodate a maximum of 150 households from the city or neighboring towns. It also has an infirmary or pharmacy, female and male comfort rooms, and laundry building among others.
“The construction of the complex will help reduce or prevent casualties and lessen the physical impact that may affect the health of the residents,” said Assistant District Engineer Ruben Delos Reyes.
The new Samar evacuation center was built as an adaptation to climate change in line with the provisions of Philippine Disaster Act of 2010.
