The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has improved the decades-old buildings of San Joaquin Central Elementary School (SJCES) in Calbayog, Samar to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for all the students.

The P18.57-million two-storey, six classroom learning facility in SJCES is part of a convergence program of DPWH with the Department of Education (DepEd), funded under the Basic Educational Facilities Fund.

According to DPWH Region 8 Director Nerie Bueno, the newly-built learning facility replaced the old single-storey building which is subject for demolition.

“The new building with comfort rooms and spacious rooms conforms to the standard classroom size. Grades 1 and 2 consisting of more than 200 students currently occupy the building,” said Director Bueno.

JCES School Principal Michael Pernia expressed his gratitude towards DPWH and DepEd for choosing their school as beneficiary of the program.

“The construction of this school building is very necessary and urgent to San Joaquin, we hope that more structures will be upgraded in the future,” said Pernia.
