Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark A. Villar stepped up in a big way to lend a helping hand to families affected by recent fire that razed several houses at Port Area in Manila.

Secretary Villar, thru his family’s Villar Sipag Foundation, took it upon himself in donating about 1,000 bags of grocery items for families left homeless by the May 26, 2021 blaze at 11th Street Railroad Drive under the jurisdiction of Barangay 650 behind the Philippine Red Cross office.

Secretary Villar, whose DPWH Central Office is just about 800 meters away from the fire scene, said that many of those affected residents have been hit with hardship especially by the severe effect to economy of COVID-19 pandemic and further became devastated after losing their homes and properties.

"With houses made of light materials gutted leaving a thousand families homeless, the best thing to do to support communities who suffer from disaster is to show Filipino compassion and help however we can that would give them peace of mind having something to eat", said Secretary Villar.

The donated goods contained in 40 boxes were turned over Monday, May 31, 2021 to Barangay Chairman Salik Arongo for distribution to families.
