A multi-purpose hall project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now being utilized as new cultural facility by residents of Barangay Sumagdang, Isabela City, Basilan
The completed P4.9-million building dubbed ‘Lumah Yakan’ School of Living Tradition Hall involves the construction of a 2-Storey facility detailed with paint-finish walls and ceilings, reinforced concrete footings, columns, beams, slabs and stairway; installation of panel doors, windows, interior and exterior plastering and tiles on all floors surface; and provision of ramp for person with disability (PWD), fire exit stairways and water systems for rest room.
“We are promoting and enriching the colorful cultures, arts and traditions of ethnic Yakans in the Island Province of Basilan,” said Secretary Mark A. Villar.
Lumah means house in the Yakan language and as its name suggest, the newly completed ‘Lumah Yakan’ multi-purpose building shall be a hub for the preservation of traditional weaving of colorful Yakan Tennun fabric, to help boost the market potentials of hand-woven crafts of Barangay Sumagdang.
The project was implemented by DPWH – Isabela City District Engineering Office.
