A new three-storey Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) Complex Building will soon rise in the University of the Philippines – Diliman Campus in Quezon City.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently commenced the construction of the project which has received an allocation of P92.6 million from 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

According to DPWH Secretary Roger G. Mercado , the new building project will replace the old Romulo Hall which served as the previous IIS building.

The new IIS Building Complex will be able to provide enough space to house both students and faculty. Aside from classrooms, the complex will have research and faculty offices, library, museum, mini-auditorium, and prayer room.

“What we will build is an IIS complex that is more than just a strong and aesthetic infrastructure but an edifice of a dynamic space of cultural understanding and shared knowledge of the rich history of Islam and our Muslim brothers and sisters,” said Secretary Mercado.

Present during the groundbreaking ceremony of the new IIS building were: DPWH Senior Undersecretary Rafael C. Yabut, Undersecretary Maria Catalina E. Cabral, Assistant Secretary Wilfredo S. Mallari, and NCR Regional Director Nomer Abel P. Canlas, joined by UP Chancellor Fidel V. Nemenzo, and UP President Danilo L. Concepcion.
