The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) constructs two (2) flood control projects to benefit low-lying barangays in the province of Aklan.
In Barangay Guinatuan, Madalag, a 594.34-lineal meter slope protection structure now protects residents and crops from the detrimental effects of excessive flooding.
DPWH Region 6 Director Tiburcio DL Canlas mentioned to Secretary Roger G. Mercado that the project consists of sheet steel pile and reinforced slope crest protection, concrete blocks and hexapod foot protection, implemented in the amount of P77.2 million.
On the other hand, a 572.25-lineal meter reinforced concrete revetment wall in Kalibo is now nearing completion with 93 percent accomplishment.
When fully-completed, the P92.7-million project will prevent overflow and soil erosion during heavy downpour, protecting the 6,139 residents of flood-prone Barangay Tigayon which is located near Aklan River.
“Locals and farmers in the affected barangays now have peace of mind knowing that they have an all-weather infrastructure to keep them safe,” said Secretary Mercado.
Both flood control projects were undertaken by DPWH Aklan District Engineering Office.
