Flood Control Structure Protects Farming Community in Hermosa, Bataan

A newly-constructed flood control structure by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) now better protects farmlands in Hermosa, Bataan against the threat of excess water overflow from Colo River in times of torrential rains.

DPWH Regional Office 3 Director Roseller A. Tolentino, in his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan and Undersecretary for Operations in Central Luzon Roberto R. Bernardo, said that the new river wall in Barangay Bacong will be the first line of defense for residents and local farmers from the detrimental effects of potential overflowing of Colo River brought upon by heavy rainfall.

The DPWH Bataan First District Engineering Office (DEO) oversaw the construction of a 208.67-meter long and 7.6-meter high protective structure built on a foundation of structural z-type steel sheet piles along the Colo River section in the community.

“With the completion of the flood control structure, lives and properties are protected, damage to farmlands is minimized, and farmers will continue to have income sources,” added Director Tolentino.

The river wall, which cost P29.4 million to build, started construction in February 2023 and completed ahead of target completion date in July 2023 right in time for the official start of the rainy season.
