New Revetment Enhances Flood Control Protection and Community Resilience in Buenavista, Quezon Province

Residents of Barangay Poblacion, Buenavista, Quezon Province, now breathe a sigh of relief as a newly completed flood control structure along the Piris River provides much-needed protection and improved safety for the community.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently completed a 406-lineal meter revetment on the left side of the Piris River. This structure is part of the flood management efforts under the “Build Better More” program of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. administration, which prioritizes the safety, resilience, and sustainable development of communities across the country.

DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Region 4A Director Jovel G. Mendoza, described that the completed structure is just the initial package of a bigger project that will mitigate flood risks. Frequent flooding has historically damaged homes, agricultural lands, and local roads while disrupting livelihoods and economic activities.

Beyond its primary function, the flood control project also revitalizes the riverside, providing the community with enhanced public spaces that promote recreation and strengthen communities.

“With the completion of this flood control structure, we are not only protecting lives and properties but also giving residents the peace of mind they deserve,” added Secretary Bonoan.

Implemented by the DPWH Quezon 3rd District Engineering Office, the project was funded under the 2024 DPWH Regular Infrastructure Program with a contract amount of ₱96.5 million.

In addition to the revetment, four (4) other infrastructure projects were also being implemented by the office to benefit the town of Buenavista amounting to P29.11 million.

Presently ongoing are the river improvement along Hagonghong Communal Irrigation System; construction of Rizal-Villa Magsaysay Road; and two (2) multi-purpose buildings in Barangay Maligaya and Batabat Norte.
