More than a hundred million pesos worth of flood-control projects will be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Southern Leyte.

In his report to DPWH Secretary Rogelio L. Singson, DPWH Region 8 Director Rolando M. Asis said that the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Fund amounting to P126.6 million will be utilized for the construction and rehabilitation of flood control structures and drainage canals in Southern Leyte, prioritizing those areas previously hit by typhoons and vulnerable to flooding.

The fund will be used to rehabilitate drainage canals and flood control structure projects along major roads of Southern Leyte, particularly along Daang Maharlika, Liloan-San Ricardo Road, Himay-angan-Silago-Abuyog boundary road, Leyte-Maasin-Macrohon-Sogod-Daang Maharlika with allocation of P17.94 million, P35.95 million, P35.79 million and 36.92 million respectively.

Regional Director Asis said that the projects were already bid out and civil works will commence soon.

“These projects are in response to studies which identified some of the municipalities in Southern Leyte that are prone to flooding,” said Asis.

In a December 2014 report of Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards), 15 municipalities of Southern Leyte were found out to be flood-susceptible during the onslaught of Typhoon Ruby.
