DPWH BUILDS NEW SCHOOL FOR BUILDING FOR AN ISLAND BARANGAY IN SAMAR

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a two-storey building project that is seen to address the increase in number of high school enrolees in an island barangay of Tarangnan, Samar.

An P8 million school building with six classrooms was built to accommodate more students of Oeste National High School, the only secondary school located at Barangay Oeste, Tarangnan, Samar.

Barangay Oeste is an island barangay in the municipality of Tarangnan, Samar which is only accessible by a one hour motorboat ride from Calbayog City.

DPWH Region 7 OIC-Director Edgar B. Tabacon said the new building under 2015 Basic Educational Facilities Fund, will directly benefit around 530 students who are currently enrolled in the school.

“We expect an influx of enrolees for the next school year especially from near and adjacent island barangays whose students need to take rough sea rides to make it to the main secondary school in Tarangnan town proper,” added Tabacon.

The municipality of Tarangnan was estimated to have low literacy some years back but with the opening of primary education in some barangays and expansion of secondary education in Barangay Oeste, its literacy rose dramatically.
