The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is implementing flood protection projects to ensure the safety of residents living near Guimaras Island’s river systems during rainy days.
According to DPWH Guimaras District Engineering Office (DEO) District Engineer Rhodora B. Nuñal, a P49.31-million construction of 380 linear-meter (l.m.) dike with esplanade in the province’s center of Barangay Poblacion, Jordan is underway and expected to be completed by March 2020.
The flood mitigation project will prevent riverbank erosion while protecting lives and livelihood of residents within the 10-hectare nearby area. Meanwhile, the provision of the esplanade will serve as a place for locals to conduct their recreational activities.
“Delivering quality flood control structures is one of the priorities of our Department. We tirelessly work to complete the dike in Jordan before the rainy season hits to optimize the protection of Guimarasnons,” District Engineer Nuñal said.
Guimaras DEO also completed the flood control structures collectively amounting to P42.68 million along Mantasic River, Brgy. East Valencia, Buenavista in October 2019 (240 l.m.); along Igcabano-Balibago River, Brgy. Cabano, San Lorenzo in November 2019 (250 l.m.); along Cabano River, Brgy. M. Chavez, San Lorenzo in November 2019 (760 l.m.); and Igcawayan Community Dam’s river control preventive measure in Brgy. Cabano, San Lorenzo in December 2019 (670 l.m.).
