The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now building a concrete bridge that will replace an old, wobbly hanging bridge and a dilapidated wooden bridge in Barangay Buntalid, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur.
In his report to Secretary Mark A. Villar, DPWH Region 13 Director Pol M. delos Santos said that the construction of permanent bridge across Carac-an River started in December 2020 is a much sought infrastructure of residents that can be utilized by both motorists and pedestrians even during rainy season.
Costing P57 Million and funded under 2020 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the new bridge spanning 63 meters will be constructed as an all-weather bridge.
The new concrete bridge, when completed, will replace two (2) bridges which are used separately by motorists and pedestrians: a wooden bridge that gets easily submerged by the river, and a hanging bridge that is wobbly and unsafe during typhoon season.
According to a resident of Barangay Buntakid, the existing wooden bridge is in bad condition due to age and is usually under flood water, leaving people no other choice but to utilize the hanging bridge.
