The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has extended the existing revetment wall along the downstream of Sibuguey River in Barangay Balugo, Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Citing from a report submitted by DPWH Zamboanga Sibugay 1st District Engineering Office, Secretary Roger G. Mercado said that the project costing P23.7-Million to lengthen the existing revetment wall to 193 lineal meters aims to protect farm lands from destruction caused by flash floods.
“It is deemed necessary to construct and improve flood mitigation structures to avoid serious impacts of flooding not just to people and their health, but also to their properties and livelihood,” said Secretary Roger G. Mercado.
The recently-completed structure will also strengthen the soil along the coastal area to prevent inundation of the river and shore up flood water come rainy season.
An estimated number of 1,262 residents is expected to reap the benefits of this project.
Most residents of Barangay Balugo rely on farming as their main source of income and sell their produce such as rice, corn, fruits, and vegetables to bigger markets in the town of Imelda and other parts of Zamboanga Sibugay.
