The southbound EDSA-Kamuning Flyover in Quezon City was reopened to motorists on Saturday, July 23, 2022 after 28 days of major repair works by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan together with Quezon City 4th District Representative Marvin Rillo; Undersecretary Roberto R. Bernardo; Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Officer-in-Charge Baltazar Melgar; DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) Director Nomer Abel P. Canlas and Asst. Director Juby B. Cordon; and Quezon City Second District Engineer Eduardo V. Santos conducted routine walk-thru inspection for the repaired bridge deck aimed at evaluating the workmanship before reopening the 527-lineal meter southbound flyover.
The three (3) southbound lanes of EDSA-Kamuning Flyover was closed on June 25 to give way for the immediate repair intervention.
DPWH earlier conducted a thorough structural assessment to determine the degree of damage of the EDSA-Kamuning Flyover after large cracks and potholes were observed.
To ensure the resilience of this flyover which was built in 1992, non-destructive testing of concrete pavement were performed for the replacement of deck slabs at span 6 between girder 2 and 3 and span 15 between girder 3 and 4.
The project also covers the repair of low and high chainage approaches of the southbound flyover.
Despite the intermittent rain showers during the past days, the DPWH Quezon City Second District Engineering Office headed by District Engineer Santos worked double time to finish the repair of the flyover considering its significant impact to traffic.
Regional Director Canlas said that Secretary Bonoan has instructed DPWH NCR to undertake inspection and assessment of the structural conditions of other old flyovers and bridges in Metro Manila, realizing the much needed seismic strengthening and upgrading activities.
