Consistent with its mandate to protect lives and properties from natural disasters, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has constructed a new flood control structure along Sanitor River in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

DPWH Region 9 Director Cayamombao D. Dia reported that the 680-meter flood control project in Barangay Sanito was completed ahead of its scheduled completion by the DPWH Zamboanga Sibugay Second District Engineering Office (DEO).

“It is important that we prevent scouring of the riverbank to prevent damage to crops and properties since Sanito River is not only one of the major river basins in the province but also serves as a major source of water supply for irrigation in Ipil,” said Director Dia.

The Sanito River Flood Control Project involved pile driving of steel sheet piles and construction of slope protection and tide embankment.

The flood control project on its third phase was funded in the amount of P34-million under the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
