The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently completed the construction of a slope protection structure along Cabatangan River in the Province of Aurora to protect nearby communities from threat of river water overflow.

DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Regional Office 3 Director Roseller A. Tolentino, said that a 1.04-linear-kilometer slope protection on a steel sheet pile foundation was built along Cabatangan River’s section in the Municipality of Maria Aurora.

Other components of the protective structure included a grouted riprap for backside slope protection; construction of gabion and a spur dike; construction of concrete ramp with mattress installation; and construction of a box culvert.

According to Secretary Bonoan, the slope protection structure is a much-needed development along Cabatangan River as it is a tributary of Aguang River and known for becoming susceptible to overflowing during typhoon season.

Aside from preventing excess river water from flooding residential areas and farmlands, the slope protection also acts as a defense against soil erosion and sedimentation, which preserves the integrity of agricultural lands along the banks of Cabatangan River.

The DPWH Aurora District Engineering Office (DEO) implemented the construction of the river control in the amount of P91.68 million sourced from the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
