The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is rushing works to complete its river embankment project that would prevent flooding in the low-lying Barangay of Masgad in the town of Malimono, Surigao del Norte.
DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from the DPWH Surigao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO), said that the ongoing project covering the construction of bank protection structures is currently 89 percent complete.
Stretching 737.74 meters, the embankment would ensure uninterrupted river and floodwater flow to the sea, preventing debris accumulation and soil erosion in the area.
“We are working hard to complete this project on time, with the goal of having it operational by the first quarter of 2024,” said DPWH Surigao del Norte 2nd DEO District Engineer Marcelino M. Operario.
Started in May 2023, the flood-control project in Barangay Masgad costing P96.5 million, is expected to be completed by February 2024.
