Low-lying communities along the Amnay River in Barangay Pagasa, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro are now safeguarded from flood-related risks with a newly- built flood control structure completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Based on the report of DPWH Regional Office IV-B Director Gerald A. Pacanan, the five (5) layer gabion flood control structure with bank protection in Barangay Pagasa aims at mitigating effects of flooding to the local communities, specifically to their agricultural lands, livestock, and properties.
“The completed flood control structure now brings relief and a sense of security to residents of Barangay Pagasa who are mostly affected by storm surges and heavy flooding in the Amnay River due to strong typhoons," said Director Pacanan.
Amnay River is one of the principal rivers in Occidental Mindoro, hence, the completed project not only protects communities but also helps ensure the continuous agricultural activities in the area.
The construction of the P45.07 Million flood control project funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2023 was implemented by DPWH - Mindoro Occidental District Engineering Office.
