The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed two (2) farm-to-market road (FMR) projects that now boost economic opportunities and local agricultural productivity in the province of Ilocos Sur.

Constructed in Barangay Suso, Sta. Maria, the new concrete road now offers farmers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in the production and distribution of agricultural goods a more convenient and cost-effective way to transport their products or services.

In his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Regional Office I Director Ronnel M. Tan said that that the Suso FMR is a 669-lineal meter road project covering concrete pavement with stone masonry on both sides costing P9.5-million.

Meanwhile, the newly-concreted 2-lane, 783-meter FMR in Barangay Salvador 2nd in Candon City now provides residents and an estimated 500 daily road users a safer and smoother travel and transport of agricultural products.

“Prior to the completion of the project, unpaved road becomes muddy and slippery during rainy days and dust covers the area during the summer season, affecting health conditions of locals and livestock,” added Director Tan.

The P14.48-million Salvador 2nd FMR project connects Barangay Salvador 2nd to Barangay Bugnay—the farthest barangay in the area.

The completion of both FMR projects brings livelihood opportunities and eventually contributes to economic growth in the 2nd District of Ilocos Sur.
