The riverside community of Barangay Poblacion, Narra, Palawan is now safeguarded from flood-related hazards following the completion of a Flood Control Structure along the Panacan River undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Based on the report of DPWH Regional Office IV-B Director Gerald A. Pacanan to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, the completed flood control project in the Municipality of Narra provides a pivotal contribution to enhancing the community’s resiliency against natural calamities and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change in the area.
The DPWH - Palawan 2nd District Engineering Office spearheaded the construction of an extensive flood mitigation system and drainage infrastructure, installed with thick revetment wall, reinforced with gabions, and steel sheet piles serving as structural support to strengthen the vulnerable riverbanks and improve drainage channels in the Panacan River, especially during the monsoon season.
“This flood control structure was built to protect communities in Barangay Poblacion from the threat of heavy flooding due to strong typhoons affecting their livelihood activities, businesses, and properties for many years,” added Director Pacanan.
Panacan River is situated in the center of the municipality of Narra and plays a significant role in providing efficient water resources to properties and agricultural lands.
Costing P50.4 Million, the flood control structure in Barangay Poblacion is funded through the 2023 DPWH Infrastructure Program.
