The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently completed the Sta. Maria River Control Project which now benefits and safeguards the agricultural community of Barangay Nagpanaoan-Subadi Norte, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur.

In his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Regional Office 1 Director Ronnel M. Tan said that the completed river control structure was designed to protect flood-prone residential areas, wildlife habitats, structures, and riverbanks.

“The 397.50-meter flood control project features concrete revetment on steel sheet files to ensure the safety of the residents of Barangay Nagpanaoan-Subadi Norte,” added Regional Director Tan.

Built along Sta. Maria River, the slope protection structure mitigates the risk of downstream flooding, protects livestock, and reduces damage to crops such as rice, corn, and tomatoes.

Costing P48.9-million, the Sta. Maria River Control Project, was funded under the General Appropriations Act of 2023 (GAA) and now contributes to agricultural productivity and boosts livelihood opportunities in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur.
