The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is close to completing a flood control structure that will enhance water flow in the coastal community of Barangay Mahayag, Albuera, Leyte.

Costing ₱95 million from the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the project implemented by DPWH Leyte 4th District Engineering Office involves the construction of a 540-lineal meter, 4.48-meter high revetment wall using steel piles, providing a sturdy foundation and preventing soil erosion.

Citing a report from DPWH Region 8 Director Edgar B. Tabacon, DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said that the project is deemed necessary for the welfare of residents of Barangay Mahayag, which has been vulnerable to flooding for years.

“When completed, locals will no longer fear displacement and losing their properties and livelihoods to flooding brought by incessant rains and typhoons,” said Director Tabacon.

With a current accomplishment rate of 89 percent, the project is set for completion in December.
