The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a flood control structure to boost community safety and mitigate water overflow in the municipality of Ajuy, Iloilo.
According to DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy Oropel, the project involved the construction of a 240-meter revetment wall consisting of geotextile geotube with concrete wave deflector, reinforced concrete carriageway, grouted riprap, and hand laid rock embankment.
It also includes the installation of solar LED lights for better visibility, especially during nighttime.
The project now benefits the residents of Barangay Malayuan, which was determined to be in one of Ajuy’s danger zones due to its potential for severe flooding, abrupt storm surges, and high tides.
Besides acting as a shield against the impact of floodwaters, the project will also serve as a docking place for local fishermen, facilitating easier transport of their catch.
“This flood control project extends beyond immediate safety as it plays a critical role in ensuring sustainable growth while protecting the livelihood and properties of the residents it serves,” said Director Oropel.
The revetment wall project was implemented by DPWH Iloilo 3rd District Engineering Office in the amount of P86.4 million.
