The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has built a flood control structure to address long-standing flooding issues along Matagoy Creek in Silay City, Negros Occidental.
DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy Oropel identified the completed project in Barangay Rizal as a 770-lineal meter stone masonry structure with embankment from borrow and installation of metallic-coated gabions.
“The structure will directly benefit communities residing along the creek and nearby subdivisions, ensuring their safety during heavy rains or typhoons,” said Director Oropel.
Aside from reducing the risk of water overflow, the flood wall also aims to protect the creek’s banks from possible erosion that may damage nearby agricultural lands and houses, ensuring that the livelihood of local farmers in the area is unaffected.
The flood control project was undertaken by DPWH Negros Occidental 1st District Engineering Office.
