Coastal communities in the towns of Pilar and Panay, Capiz are now safe against the recurring threat of flooding with river control structures completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
According to DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy Oropel, the completed projects are a 751.5-lineal meter flood mitigation structure along Balisong River in Barangay San Ramon, Pilar, and a 223.3-lineal meter river control along Panay River in Barangay Cogon, Panay.
“These major rivers have been prone to overflow especially during inclement weather which has affected residents along surrounding areas. Hence, the structures are designed to handle excessive water flow and normalize water levels, ensuring that communities and their livelihoods remain protected,” said Director Oropel.
With strengthened riverbanks, erosion and inundation along nearby local roads will also be prevented, reducing road closures and facilitating unhampered movement of goods.
Besides flood mitigation, the improved riverfronts have been transformed into scenic and accessible spaces for locals and tourists to enjoy leisure activities like sightseeing and sunset viewing.
The Balisong and Cogon River Control projects are aligned with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s vision of a “Bagong Pilipinas” where lives and properties are safeguarded against harsh weather conditions through sustainable infrastructure.
Both projects were implemented by DPWH Capiz 1st District Engineering Office in the amount of P95.2 million and P92.5 million, respectively.
