In support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s “Build Better More” infrastructure program, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is fast-tracking a farm-to-market road (FMR) project in Barangay Payac, Bangui, Ilocos Norte, aimed at enhancing market access for local farmers.
In his report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region 1 Director Ronnel M. Tan, said that the 3.10-kilometer FMR project involves the construction of drainage systems, slope protection works, and the installation of 15 solar-powered LED streetlights to improve road safety during nighttime.
Prior to the road construction, the 10-kilometer trip from Barangay Payac to Bangui usually takes 20-25 minutes was shortened to 10-15 minutes, thereby reducing transportation costs and minimizing post-harvest losses.
Implemented by the Ilocos Norte 1st District Engineering Office, District Engineer Glenn C. Miguel said that the project will address the challenges of the local farmers in transporting their agricultural produce to the market, which results in decreased income.
District Engineer Miguel also said that civil works began on May 2024 and is on track for completion within this second quarter of 2025.
Costing 95.78-million, the Barangay Payac FMR project is being undertaken in convergence with the Department of Agriculture (DA).
