Metal railings that will ensure safety of pedestrians and bikers are now being installed at the Leyte Road Heightening and Tide Embankment (RHTE) Project in Eastern Visayas Region.

In her report to Secretary Mark A. Villar, DPWH-VIII Director Nerie Bueno said installation works have begun at the subsection 4.2B which is part of a 7.44-kilometer RHTE Section 4 that covers Barangays 89, 90, of Tacloban City and Barangays Candahug, MacArthur Shrine, Baras, Bernard Reed Bridge, and Cogon of Palo, Leyte.

“Eventually, the entire 31.47-kilometer Storm Surge Protection structure that will protect the coastal villages of Tacloban, Palo, and Tanauan, Leyte, will have metal railings to provide safety and prevent accidental falls of people walking and biking,” said Director Bueno.

Section 4 is now 61 percent completed, while the 5.07-kilometer Section 5 covering Barangay Cogon, San Joaquin, Mohon and Calogcog in Palo and Tanauan is also ongoing.

When completed, Leyte RHTE will provide protection to the residents of the 30,800 houses/buildings along coastal areas that are vulnerable from future storm surges brought by typhoons.
